Image-obsessed culture manifested through social media platforms draws the guidelines for online behaviour and maximizes the speed of image production and consumption in order to remain relatable. One of the cultural products of our times is the selfie. It is widely accepted that the selfie’s goal is to be put online in social platforms to indicate one’s coolness. The more curated the feed though, the less true representation of the self.
Through a series of non-curated selfie shots, Erica Lapadat – Janzen’s work “Self Doc” is an exploration of self-documentation and narcissism, composed of 2,748 photobooth webcam photos taken over the span of 5 years.
